Today I went to a Singapore Public Service career talk at Millenium Copthorne hotel in Kensington.
The speaker for the day was Ms Lim Soo Hoon, Perm sec for Public Service Division. She talked about how she has worked in the public sector for 30 years, and said you should not work in the public sector if you are:
1) looking for alot of money
2) likes to see results quickly
3) thin-skinned (since u often need to face public discrimination from unknown strangers)
Well, basically I went because I wanted to give myself the chance to see what are the opportunities out there. It does sound very interesting to hear about the big picture of the public sector. How you develop policies, and implement them, all for the good of the people of Singapore. How you plan way in excess of 5, 10, 15 and even 20 years.
But usually what I hear from people who work in the public sector, it seems that their work is boring and repetitive and filled with red tape. (not that I have alot of friends working in the public sector though)
Is this what I want? I dunno. But what I do know is that in the public sector, u can never compete on fair grounds. since there are always the prestigious scholars marked for fast track in their careers.
As I stepped out of the hotel by the road, I saw a group of (old) men whom I thought were security guards or bellboys with their caps on and quite ill-fitting suits with alot of luggages around them. As I walked nearer, to my horror, I realised they were SQ pilots!
